Our History
Created by Optometrists, for Optometrists
Vision One Credit Union was founded on a simple but powerful idea: independent optometrists deserve a financial institution that understands their profession, supports their goals, and reinvests in the future of private practice optometry.
In 1951, visionary members of the California Optometric Association recognized the need for a financial institution dedicated to the unique financial needs of independent optometrists. From that vision, the California Optometric Credit Union was established. As the needs of private practice optometry expanded beyond California, so did our commitment. Over time, our reach grew nationwide, and Vision One Credit Union was born.
Today, Vision One Credit Union proudly serves as a member-owned, not-for-profit financial institution dedicated to supporting independent optometry. Our mission remains rooted in the same purpose that inspired our founding: helping private practice optometrists enter ownership, strengthen their practices, build long-term wealth, and plan successful transitions.
A Credit Union Dedicated to Independent Optometry
Unlike traditional financial institutions that serve many industries, Vision One Credit Union is focused on the needs of private practice optometrists. Every product, service, and financial solution we offer is designed with a deep understanding of the optometric profession and the business realities of private practice ownership.
We understand that owning an optometry practice requires more than clinical expertise. It requires access to capital, sound financial planning, practice management insight, business valuation education, transition guidance, and a financing partner that understands how optometry practices operate, grow, and transfer value.
Whether an optometrist is purchasing a first practice, buying into a partnership, expanding to a second location, investing in equipment, relocating, remodeling, acquiring owner-occupied real estate, refinancing debt, or preparing for retirement, Vision One Credit Union is committed to providing financial solutions that support long-term practice success.
Member-Owned, Not-for-Profit, and Profession-Focused
Vision One Credit Union operates as a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative. We are governed by an all-optometrist, volunteer Board of Directors that understands the importance of independent practice and the financial challenges facing private practice owners.
Our structure matters. As a not-for-profit credit union, our purpose is not to generate profits for outside shareholders. Our purpose is to serve our members and support the profession we were created to serve.
Vision One is funded by deposits from independent optometrists, optometric associations and societies, optometric colleges, and organizations that support private practice optometry. Those deposits are then reinvested directly back into independent optometry through loans, financial services, and educational resources designed to strengthen private practice ownership.
This creates a unique cycle of support: optometry deposits help fund optometry ownership, growth, transitions, and long-term practice sustainability.
Reinvesting in the Future of Private Practice
Private practice optometry plays a vital role in patient care, community health, professional independence, and the long-term strength of the optometric profession. Vision One Credit Union is committed to helping preserve and expand private practice opportunities for current and future generations of optometrists.
We dedicate our resources to addressing industry-wide challenges, including the rising cost of practice ownership, the complexity of practice transitions, the need for reliable business valuations, and the importance of helping emerging doctors understand the path to ownership.
For new and emerging optometrists, Vision One helps reduce barriers to private practice ownership by providing financing guidance, acquisition education, and access to lending solutions designed around the economics of optometry practices.
For established practice owners, we provide support for growth, expansion, modernization, real estate ownership, partner transitions, and retirement or exit planning.
For buyers and sellers, we help bridge the communication gap by educating both parties on valuation, financing capacity, transaction structure, working capital, lease considerations, transition risk, and the importance of assembling the right advisory team.
More Than a Lender
Vision One Credit Union is more than a source of financing. We are a trusted financial resource for private practice optometrists.
Our role is to help practice owners make informed financial decisions at every stage of ownership. That includes helping owners understand how lending structure affects cash flow, how practice value is created, how debt capacity is measured, how transitions are financed, and how long-term planning can support both business success and personal financial goals.
Through complimentary financial education programs, advisory conversations, and direct access to experienced decision makers, Vision One provides practical guidance designed to help optometrists move forward with clarity and confidence.
Our approach is educational, relationship-based, and profession-focused. We believe informed practice owners build stronger practices, make better financial decisions, and create more sustainable long-term value.
Supporting Every Stage of the Private Practice Lifecycle
Vision One Credit Union supports private practice optometrists throughout the full ownership journey, including:
- Students and associates exploring future ownership
- First-time practice buyers
- Doctors purchasing an existing practice
- Associates buying into a partnership
- Owners financing partner buy-outs
- Practices investing in equipment and technology
- Owners remodeling, relocating, or expanding their offices
- Doctors opening a second location
- Practice owners purchasing or refinancing owner-occupied commercial real estate
- Sellers preparing for succession, retirement, or transition
- Buyers and sellers seeking guidance on practice valuation and financing structure
At each stage, our goal is to provide financing solutions and educational support that align with the owner’s professional objectives, practice cash flow, and long-term financial goals.
Strengthening Independent Optometry
Vision One Credit Union exists to strengthen the long-term economic viability of independent optometry. We believe private practice ownership remains one of the most meaningful paths for optometrists to serve patients, build community relationships, create professional independence, and develop long-term financial security.
By reinvesting deposits from the optometric community back into the profession, Vision One helps support the practices, owners, students, associations, and institutions that sustain independent optometry nationwide.
Our commitment is clear: to serve as a dedicated financial partner, educational resource, and advocate for private practice optometry.
From our founding in 1951 to our nationwide presence today, Vision One Credit Union remains guided by the same purpose — supporting independent optometrists with financial solutions, education, and leadership dedicated exclusively to the profession we serve.
Vision One Credit Union endeavors to be the financial institution of choice for private optometric practices nationwide. We are dedicated to fostering trust, enhancing financial literacy, and providing financial guidance to create practice value and personal wealth.
